Special Games

Special Games 2024
Kiwanis Clubs from the Peninsula and South Bay put on Special Games again this year on the first Friday of May, just like we have for many years. Once again, our Club was in charge of Skittle Ball for this year’s Special Games at Saratoga College. This is not Special Olympics, but it is an all-inclusive event that was developed specifically for the growing number of extremely challenged, uniquely abled kids in our communities.

Originally, two Adaptive Physical Education teachers in Santa Clara County started the Games in 1978; eventually reaching out for a group to help them expand and sponsor the fun, physical event that they had created. Enter Walter Chronert, with the Kiwanis Club of Los Altos, and Kiwanis Special Games was formed.

This collaboration allowed more and more kids to compete on their own levels for many years. In May 2019, over 1000 kids came to West Valley College in Saratoga for this annual competition. And, now even more children meet in May to enjoy an obstacle course, frisbee throws, bean bag tosses, 100-yd dash events, skittle ball, and a parade featuring the athletes and their families and friends–all thanks to Kiwanis Clubs in the Bay Area and their sponsored student leadership clubs.

Skittle Bowl Competition

Special Games took place again at West Valley College on May 19, 2023. It’s an annual major and ongoing project of many Kiwanis clubs, and our club managed the Skittle Bowl competition. Thank you, Charlie Porter and Jan Gabus for organizing our part of the Games. Key Club students were invited to help out at the event, too.
